Foam rolling as a self-massaging technique is gaining ground especially now that its usefulness in increasing flexibility and relaxing muscles has been demonstrated. It works by targeting the myofascia, the connective tissue that envelops the muscles and provides structure and support. In a healthy person, this fibrous tissue is pliable. Poor posture, lack of activity, or overuse of the tissue results in its tightness, which is often times accompanied by pain.

Investing In a Foam Roller

A foam roller is ingeniously designed to be used for muscle and trigger point massage. It is made with a sturdy core with a surface material that is slightly more rigid than muscle tissue so that it can provide sufficient pressure without creating any discomfort. There are different surface bumps on the roller to enable you achieve different massage strokes for greater effects.

Unlike traditional foam rollers, this one features a hollow core. This, it has been discovered, allows greater pressure to be applied on the fascia.
